 School/Academic/Learning Disability/Placement Testing:

What are the benefits of a psychoeducational assessment?

  • You want to better understand you or your child’s strengths and learning challenges. An assessment is NOT just about finding out “what is wrong”, it is also about acknowledging and suggesting ways to utilise ones own strengths and individual ways of learning to achieve greater academic success
  • Knowing your or your child's cognitive profile allows you to advocate more clearly for support as schools typically have requirements they need to meet (e.g. a formal clinical diagnosis, specific cognitive or academic assessment results) before they are able to implement certain supports or accomodations
  • You are looking for specific recommendations for how to best support learning needs, to gain accomodations for elementary, secondary or post secondary education programs, or to put in place when writing professional school entrance examinations, including LSAT, MCAT, CFA, GRE, EPPP.

The assessments we provide cover:

  • Cognitive abilities – measures your level of functioning for various cognitive abilities (e.g. working memory, cognitive processing speed, fluid reasoning). This information can provide information about strengths and challenges to help tailor academic program planning and identify beneficial supports.

  • Functional academic testing – you will learn how you or your child's academic achievement in the classroom has progressed and whether there are "gaps" or areas of strength that are present in the learning profile. This information caan be useful as a baseline for trialling or understanding impacts of in-class support, program modifications and accommodation strategies and for confirming areas in need of academic intervention.

  • Learning difficulties or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) – results of PsychoEducational  assessments identify whether learning difficulties meet the criteria for a formal diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disorder.

  • Clinical psychosocial assessment – understanding any additional mental health difficulties that might be impacting learning, such as anxiety, depression, social development. Given the co-occurrence of educational challenges and other mental health difficulties, this will assist in identifying the most helpful support planning.

Brief Screening for Gifted Placement Inquiries
  • Gifted Screening A more brief examination of intellectual abilities, typically required for placement in advanced or Gifted Programs (includes select WISC-V/WAIS-IV Intellectual test components, Memory skills, Parent/teacher/observer/Self Report Questionnaires, Academic screening + Mood/emotional screening.  Results are presented during a Feedback session and a brief report is prepared with the findings: $2150

Comprehensive PsychoEducational Assessment with Learning Disability Identification

Typically, a psychoeducational assessment will include some or all of the following components:
  • Intake/initial consultation session
  • School/teacher consultation, Observational reports
  • Review of developmental, prior academic, medical history documentation
  • One-on-one session to discuss concerns, gather insights into learning challenges
  • Test administration and scoring
  • Test interpretation, results formulation and formal diagnostic report writing
  • Feedback session to discuss findings
  • Finalizing and presenting completed report

On average, the total time to complete PsychoEducational components is approximately 15-18 hrs.  We rovide a thorough assessment and include additional time allocations for liaising with your school and report writing, which allows your psychologist to spend considerable time developing a rich understanding of the unique learning profile. This is particularly important given that many of the tests used can’t be repeated for an extended period of time (e.g. 2 years).

Should any additional concerns or factors which may be impacting on learning (such as questions about possible ADHD or autism) emerge during the initial consulation or assessment, any additional costs of adding on further diagnostic components will be discussed, and the availability of incorporating additional testing into the PsychoEducational assessment timeline.

Based on the above range of 15-18 clinical hours, the base cost of a comprehensive PsychoEducational assessment, with learning disability/gifted diagnosis provided if supported by data, is $4500.00.      Should there be additional testing for ADHD or ASD indicated, the costs will be discussed prior to any further testing being initiated.   Your psychologist will be able to provide you a more specific estimate following your intake session

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) & ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD)

According to the most recent scientific literature, 50 to 70% of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) also present with comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). From a clinical perspective, this high rate of comorbidity is important to clarify and better understand during an assessment, so strategies for behaviour, symptoms and supports needed for academic, social, relationship and workplace accomodations and therapies can be fine-tuned to meet the needs of each individual and their concerns.  Therefore, from over 20 years of clinical experience, we decided to assess for both ASD and ADHD concurrently, to be able to offer the most constructive, detailed and targetted strategies and recommendations for symptoms and behaviours, and to lower the risk of missing critical diagnostic information and opportunities for support.

Does my Health Insurance cover the fees?

Depending on your current Private health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for Psychological or Neuropsychological assessment and therapy fees to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your insurance provider directly to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy/psychological services.

We’d recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your specific benefits:

  • Does our health insurance plan include mental health benefits?  Are all family members covered?
  • Does our Insurance plan limit how many therapy sessions per calendar year we can have? If so, what is the limit?
  • Do we need written approval from my primary care physician in order for therapy or assessment services to be covered?
  • Are the fees for a Psychoeducational, Neuropsychological (ADD/ADHD, ASD) or Clinical Psychology (Anxiety/Depression) covered under our insurance?
