Unique to the Toronto Neurodevelopmental Centre is our Director, Dr. Robyn Stephens, a Clinical Neuropsychologist. A Clinical Neuropsychologist is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with the College of Psychologists and Behavioural Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) who has attained further comprehensive knowledge and expertise through:
- Additional graduate level academics, and training to understand the brain-behaviour relationship and the complexity and overlap of neurodevelopmental disorders
- Post graduate clinical training focussed internships and Post Doctoral fellowships in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, UHN
- College of Psychologists and Behavioural Analysts of Ontario Registration academic, training and oral examination competence to practice in the field of Clinical Neuropsychology
- Over 10 years training under U of T appointed Clinical Supervisers, Dr. Paul Sandor, MD, FRCP (C), Neuropsychiatrist, and Dr. Colin Shapiro, MD, FRCP(C), Neuropsychiatrist, at the Tourette Syndrome Neurodevelopmental Clinic, UHN
The qualifications of a Clinical Neuropsychologist support a scientifically based understanding and application of a brain-related perspective when interpreting clinical assessment results, and competency to formulate and provide accurate clinical diagnoses through differential diagnoses inclulding ruling in/out other clinical presentations which may present or overlap with similar symptoms. Dr. Stephens holds CPBAO credentials to clinically assess, diagnose and provide therapy for all age groups (children, adolescents and adults) as well as families.
Through a comprehensive diagnostic process (not simply questionniares), at Toronto Neurodevelopmental Centre we offer focussed insight to gain a deeper understanding of each individual's strengths and challenges. Acquiring this level of clinical knowledge provides a well informed basis for not only diagnostic formulation, but also tailored treatment planning, academic recommendations, professional/work accomodations, and program selections. Individualized intervention and therapy is always unique to the needs of every one of our patients and their personal goals.
We also offer services by our highly trained and dedicated clinicians, working under the supervision of Dr. Stephens, including: therapy sessions to learn skills for managing anxiety, depression, or social challenges. Strategies for getting "unstuck", for improving motivation, setting and establishing personal goals, relationship communication, and for learning how to best navigate "the world" most successfully and less stressfully, across academic, post secondary, relationship, work/professional and family scenarios.
